Did any of you know the collective term for a group of zebras? A freaking dazzle. How seriously cool is that? Which is even cooler as it means Mini Me and I are a Dazzle ourselves after my latest makes.
Scotland has been experiencing a bit of a heatwave recently. For those not familiar with the Scots tongue the phrase you need to know for hots day is ‘taps aff’. Aka white pasty men with wobbly bits take their tshirts off and wander around like they are gods gift.
Me on the other hand would rather not scare the horses. My top is staying firmly on despite the heat.
But I’m still too hot so I needed a nice cool cotton top.
This New Look pattern is an oldie but a goodie. It was the first pattern I ever bought and I was aghast at the instructions that it should take 2 hours. It took me an entire week to make this the first time I did it. And that involved unpicking the zip about 5 times (and swearing roughly 500 times).
Today it took me precisely 1 baby nap and I even did French seams and used bias binding for the neck and arm holes and hacked the back into a button back. Felt like I was walking on air when I finished it!
And of course Mini Me clearly liked it because she demanded a dress in the same fabric immediately. I didn’t want to use all my precious fabric up on her (she’ll only get it covered in paint, play dough and mud) so I used the Oliver and S block I’d used to make her birthday dress to so a zebra insert only. The denim is left over from my Butterick cullottes I made the other week.
All in all its a complete left over dress and yet I have complete envy. It’s lovely!
So that’s our dazzle of zebras which are freaking fabulous in my opinion! Now my next challenge involves flamingos- wonder what a group of flamingos are called? Clearly my zoology degree was useless as I have no idea.
I belieeeeve, if I’m not mistaken, that the collective noun for flamingos is a ‘flamboyance’! Could that be any more perfect?! My favourite is still a murder of crows – being Scottish and all π

You are correct! And guess what fabric is just coming out of the washing machine! (flamingos not crows- that’s more of a winter colour I think π)

Your sense of humor slays me! Iβm a bit Scottish, so said my Grandpa and DNA verified. You and your little are adorable in your dazzle of zebras. As for collective nouns for animals, I believe my favorite is a congress of baboons. Our US Congress certainly fits the description of baboons!

Congratulations Yvonne on being a little bit amazing! (Im sure the rest of you is amazing but the scottish bit is super amazing π). Apparently owls are a parliament so you Americans can have your baboons are we’ll have our owls π

You always make me laugh, I’m pretty sure this is the same New Look pattern I started sewing with, and felt so discouraged by when it took me weeks, not days, certainly not hours, to finish it! I love this zebra fabric and your daughters dress is gorgeous too.

I made my first top with this and gaily wore it for at least a year before it dawned on me that it looked like scrubs. Husband had apparently thought this for a year but had wisely kept schtum

Love them both! I was going to say theyβre dazzling but I see another bad-pun-loving commenter already beat me to it. π
